His father Thomas Rhett Akins Sr. is a famous successful American country music singer and songwriter and his younger sister Kasey Lee Akins. His parents divorced when he was 9. After high school, Rhett went to college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, to study communications.
He dropped out of college when he was 20 to pursue a career in music. He started playing at the frat parties and club. Later, he was approached by an executive from Big Machine Label Group and offered him a publishing deal to write songs.
