About Alphonse Areola

Alphonse Francis Areola is a French professional football player who plays for Premier League club West Ham United and the France national team as a goalkeeper. He started playing football at the age of six for Entente Sportive des Petits Anges in 1999 and spent seven years at his local club. In 2006, he joined the youth team of Paris Saint-Germain and was enrolled at the Clairefontaine football centre in order to further his development. He returned to PSG the following year and signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2009, putting pen to paper on a three-year deal. After progressing through the youth ranks at PSG, he made his senior debut for the club on 18 May 2013. After his impressive performances at West Ham United, on 27 June 2022, he completed his permanent transfer to West Ham United signing a five-year contract with an option for a further year for the transfer fee paid to PSG was reportedly between €9 million and €12 million.


On the international level, Areola has represented France at various age levels. He has represented France at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20, U21, and the senior level. He was part of the France U20 team that won the 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey. He had previously featured for France at the 2010 UEFA European U17 Championship and the 2012 UEFA European U19 Championship, and subsequently at the 2015 UEFA European U21 Championship. On 1 October 2015, he was first called up to the senior team for the friendlies against Denmark and Armenia, however, he was not able to make any appearances. On 17 May 2018, he was named in Deschamps' 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where he served as the third goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris and Steve Mandanda as France went on to lift the title. In doing so, he became the first player since Argentina's Hector Zelada in 1986 to lift the World Cup trophy despite being uncapped for his country at the time. He made his senior international team debut for France on 6 September 2018 in the UEFA Nations League match against Germany and was named man of the match in the encounter which ended in a goalless draw.
