The show documents the extended Kilcher family, descendants of Swiss immigrants and Alaskan pioneers, Yule, and Ruth Kilcher, at their homestead around the greater Homer area. The Kilcher family stays without plumbing, modern heating and also hasn't used other benefits of the modern-day in the extreme cold of Alaska. They subsist on farming, hunting, fishing and prepare in advance for the long winters.
