An Irish vocalist and recording artist is named for Shane MacGowan. He is famous for being the lead singer and songwriter of Celtic punk band the Pogues. Shand MacGowan was born as Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan on 25th December 1957 in Pembury, Kent, England. He was born to Therese, a traditional Irish dancer, and singer and Maurice MacGowan, a wages clerk at C&A. He also has a sister named Siobhan MacGowan. He holds English-Irish nationality and his ethnicity is Mixed. About his education, he studied at Holmewood House School at Turnbridge Well. He then won a scholarship to the prestigious Westminster School in 1971 but was expelled from the institution for taking drugs. He had a major nervous breakdown when he was 17 and was admitted to a hospital for six months. As of 2019, he celebrated his 62nd birthday. He is Christian by religion.  

Shane MacGowan: Career (Beginning-Present)

  • Shane drew upon his Irish heritage when founding The Pogues and changed his early punk style for a more traditional sound with tutoring from his extended family. 
  • His influences are documented in the biography, Rake at the Gates of Hell: Shane MacGowan in Context. MacGowan has often cited the 19th-century Irish poet James Clarence Mangan and playwright Brendan Behan as influences.
  • He co-wrote "Fairytale of New York" between 1985 and 1987. 
  • He and The Pogues released several albums.
  • He also appeared on Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" in the year 1997. 
  • He then formed a new band, Shane MacGowan and The Popes, recording two studio albums, a live album, three tracks on The Popes Outlaw Heaven (2010) and a live DVD, and touring internationally.
  • Shane MacGowan and The Popes toured extensively in the UK, Ireland and Europe from the year 2003 to 2005. 
  • He rejoined The Pogues permanently in 2005. 
  • The Pogues re-released "Fairytale of New York" to raise funds for the Justice For Kirsty Campaign and Crisis at Christmas. 
  • He was voted 50th in the NME Rock Heroes List in 2006. 
  • He played impromptu shows in Dublin with a new five-piece backing band named The Shane Gang, including In Tua Nua rhythm section Paul Byrne (drums) and Jack Dublin (bass), with manager Joey Cashman on the whistle in 2010. 
  • This line up went to Lanzarote to record a new album in 2010. 
  • He made a return to the stage on 13 June 2019 at the RDS Arena in Dublin as a guest for Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders.
  • He was announced to appear on 7 July alongside a host of guests for the Feis Liverpool 2019's finale but the event was ultimately canceled due to a lack of ticket sales and funding issues. Feis Liverpool is the UK's largest celebration of Irish music and culture.
