Sidelined NRL star Jack de Belin has been committed to stand trial on charges he raped a teenager five times. St George Illawarra lock and another man each face five charges of aggravated sexual assault in a company after the alleged incident involving a 19-year-old woman at a Wollongong unit in December. One of the charges against De Belin and Shell Cove man Callan Sinclair, 22, alleges the pair recklessly inflicted actual bodily harm. He pleaded not guilty to rape in February. Sinclair has indicated he will also fight the charges. De Belin, a former NSW State of Origin player, said nothing as magistrate Michael Stoddart on Wednesday committed him to the Wollongong District Court. De Belin, the most prominent subject of the NRL’s controversial no-fault stand-down policy, is appealing a ruling that the code can legally prevent players facing serious criminal charges from playing while their matters are before the courts. The Federal Court in June heard De Belin’s District Court rape trial may not take place until 2020.
Sexual Assault of Jack de Belin
On 13th December 2018, he was charged by police with aggravated sexual assault following an encounter with a woman in Wollongong. The incident is reported to have happened after the woman had left a nightclub with a group of men including de Belin. The woman was under the impression the group would head to another nightclub but ended up at an apartment block where it is claimed de Belin, and another St George player stripped naked and sexually assaulted her. De Belin has denied the allegations and any wrongdoing.
He lost his federal court bid to be reinstated by the NRL on 17th May 2019. On 28th May 2019, he was charged with two further counts of sexual assault. He was committed to stand trial over allegations of sexual assault on 24th July 2019. He faces charges of five counts of rape.
