Pete formed Buzzcocks with Howard Devoto after the two met at the Bolton Institute of Technology in the year 1975.

Shelley took over as the lead vocalist and chief songwriter when Devoto left the group.

He released his first solo single, the song "Homosapien" in the year 1981.
