A Sri Lankan Vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and composer, Ivor Sylvester Sunil Perena was popularly known as Sunil Perera. He was famous for being the lead singer of the Sri Lankan band "The Gypsies" created by his father, Anton Perera along with his brothers: Nihal, Lal, Nimal, Piyal, and uncle's son, grandpa's son, & daughter, there were all seven of the crew. He was best recognized for his hit songs such as "None  Mage Sudu None", "Luna Dhehi", "Kurumitto", "Oye Ojaye", "Pity Kotapan None", "Signore", "Koththamalli", "Buongiorno", and much more.
As an Ideology, Sunil Perera came up with his own ideology about the sociopolitical situation in the country and was highly critical of Sri Lankan society and politics. He was a vocal critic of the administration of Gotabaya Rajapakse and Mahinda Rajapakse as well as he openly talked about sensitive topics like sex which are often deemed as taboo subjects in conservative Sri Lanka. In 2017, he went to the Department of Inland Revenue and insisted that he should pay income tax for his income as a member of the music group only. However, he learned under Vincent Jayawardane and George Ferdinando. He has voice training under Lorean Abeysekar, Lily Godridge, and Maryanne David. His first his "Linda Langa Sangamaya" was released in 1972/1973 along with Amma Amma Me Mata. His song "Diyawannawe Inna" was featured in the film "Jaya Sri Amathithuma" in 2019. He recently works such as I don't know Why" address mere sociopolitical issues through humor and his many songs have been banned by the State media due to criticizing the government.

With the name of Ivor Sylvester Sunil Perera, he took birth on 14 September 1952 in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He held Sri Lankan nationality and belonged to the Sri Lankan-white ethnicity. Sunil Perera is the son of his father Anton Perera, an ex-army & musician who formed the original Gypsies band as well as he was a clerk at the government Postal Department, and his mother, Dorine Perera. He has four siblings: Piyal Parera, Nihal Perera, Nimal Perera, & Lal Perera.
Moving towards Sunil Perera's education, he was educated at St. Sebastian's College with his school education grade four. Later, he finished school in the prestigious St. Peter's College, Colombo.

Sunil Perera was a married guy. He was married to Geetha Kulatunga. He met Geetha during her O/L classes and she went for a show by the Gypsies with her sister and cousins in 1981. The couple got engaged with their parent's blessing when she was 16 years old. They had four children: two sons named Sajith, & Gayan, and two daughters named Rehana, & Manisha, who followed a Fashion Designing course. His son Sajith worked at Ceylinco Group with runs his own advertising business and his son Gayan is a musician who formed the popular band "Daddy" which band produced many songs "Massina", "Ai Kale", "Chandrayan Pidu", "Dagalanna". By sexuality, he was straight.


Moreover, Sunil Perera was arrested by Homagama police due to the fact Geetha's parents had lodged a complaint at the police saying that he had abducted Geetha on 25 October 1981. Also, Geetha's parents never allowed her to have an affair with him and were closed the case by both the parents.

On 6 September 2021, Sunil Perera has passed away due to COVID-19 at the age of 68 while receiving treatment at a private hospital. In August 2021, the rumored of his death on social media after he was tested positive for COVID-19 and he was treated at a private hospital in Colombo with made a recovery from COVID-19. After a few weeks from complete recovery, he has been readmitted to the ICU teated in a Private Hospital in Colombo on 5 September due to a sudden illness.
