She is best known for her role as Barbara Cooper Royer on the sitcom One Day at a time, Gloria on the religious drama series, Touched by an Angel, and Melanie Moretti on the sitcom, Hot in Cleveland. As a television personality, she is best known for hosting the cooking show, Valerie's Home Cooking and Kids Baking Championship on Food Network. She has earned several awards and nominations in her career. She won two Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in One Day at a Time in 1981 and 1982. She has also won two Daytime Emmy Awards for her cooking show, Valerie's Home Cooking. 

Her former guitarist husband, Eddie Van Halen died battling throat cancer on 6 October 2020. They were married together from 1981 to 2007.
