David Teague has shed tears of joy after being formally unveiled as the new full-time head coach of AFL club Carlton on Thursday, completing a meteoric and improbable rise.
Teague was given almost no chance of succeeding the sacked Brendon Bolton on a full-time basis when he stepped into the role after Round 11 as a caretaker. Carlton’s football director Chris Judd then said the club didn’t want to hire a coach that still had “training wheels” on before former Brisbane head coach and current Port Adelaide assistant Michael Voss was interviewed for the job
But an on-field resurgence that has seen the Blues win five of their past nine games — and the enthusiastic backing of the playing group, including skipper Patrick Cripps — has won over the selection panel. Flanked by Blues president Mark LoGiudice and chief executive Cain Liddle, Teague, who signed a three-year deal, thanked the selection panel, the players and the staff for their support. But as he thanked his family, he broke down.
“I came prepared this time. I’ve got some tissues. I normally forget,” an emotional Teague said with a smile.“To my family, it means a lot, to those here and to Mum and Dad and my siblings that aren’t here.“To all of Katandra as well, it’s a big family, it’s a big community town and they get behind me.”
The former North Melbourne and Blues defender guided the Blues to five wins in nine games as Carlton’s caretaker. “It’s an absolute honor to be able to coach this football club. It’s been a journey to get here. My family has done it tough going from Perth to Adelaide,” he said.
