But later he developed his interest in the speech team and became a two-time state champion in comedy speech writing and received awards twice from the Illinois High Speech Association: for “original comedy” in his junior year and for “humorous acting duet” in his senior year. He attended Illinois State University and graduated in theatre arts.

LaRoyce Hawkins initially began his acting career by starring at the College play and Drama. His first college play was the August Wilson production  "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" where he played the role of Toledo. In 2008, He got his first major motion picture role in the feature film "The Express: The Ernie Davis Story" while he was still a college student. In 2011, He appeared in a short film "Reflection". The same year he also starred in one of the episodes of the TV show "Detroit 1-8-7". In 2012, He starred in another TV show "Underemployed". 

In 2013, he played a role in another short film "Google Me Love". The same year he appeared in "Chicago Fire", an American action-drama television series where he portrays as Officer Kevin Atwater. The series is still running in 2020 also and Hawkins is still a cast member of the show till now. 

In 2014 Hawkins played in "Chicago P.D." which is an American police procedural drama television series where he portrays as Officer Kevin Atwater. The series is still running in 2020 also and Hawkins is still a cast member of the show till now.

The year 2018 was a boon for him because he got to play in two big-screen movies:- "Canal Street" which is a 2018 American drama thriller film and "Hope Springs Eternal" where he portrayed the role of Mr. Baser. 

In 2019, He started playing a Recurring role in the TV show "South Side" and is still playing till present in the new season of the show. 

The same year he also starred in the film "The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain" where he has portrayed as Kenneth Chamberlain Jr.

The film is based on the true story of the events that led to the death of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an elderly African American veteran with bipolar disorder, who was killed during a conflict with police officers who were dispatched to check on him.
