Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. He is the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Francis is the first Jesuit pope. He is also the first pope in more than a millennium who is not European. He is the first pope ever to come from the Americas and the first from the Southern Hemisphere. From 1998 until he was elected as the pope, Francis was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 28 February 2013, a papal conclave elected him as his successor on 13 March 2013 at the age of 76. He chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
