Tsai Ing-wen is a Taiwanese politician. She is currently serving as the President of Taiwan. She won the presidential election in 2016 and was re-elected for a second term in January 2020. She is the first woman elected to the office, as well as the seventh president of the Republic of China and the second president from the Democratic Progressive Party. Prior to her presidency, she served as party chair from 2008 to 2012 and from 2014 to 2018.

Tsai Ing-wen was born on 31 August 1956. Her birth place is in Zhongshan, Taipei in Taiwan. She holds Taiwanese nationality. She was born to a father, Tsai Chieh-sheng, and a mother, Chang Chin-Fong. She was the youngest of 11 children of her father. Her father married 4 times. She has 3 siblings and 8 half-siblings.
She attended Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls High School. She later studied law at the behest of her father. She studied law at the College of Law, National Taiwan University. She later obtained her Master of Laws degree at Cornell University Law School and Ph.D. in law from the London School of Economics.
Upon returning to Taiwan, she taught law at the School of Law of Soochow University and National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan.
Tsai Ing-wen political career
Tsai entered the political fraternity in 2000 when she was appointed the high-profile appointment of the chair of the Mainland Affairs Council.
She later joined the Democratic Progressive Party in 2004.
She was then elected as a legislator-at-large in the 2004 legislative election.
She was appointed to the post of vice president of the Executive Yuan in January 2006. She concurrently served as chairwoman of the Consumer Protection Commission.
