An English actress, Barbara Ann Deeks was professionally known as Barbara Windsor. She was well recognized for her appearances in the "Carry On" films and for playing Peggy Mitchell in the BBC One soap opera "EastEnders". She was a two-time British Soap Opera Award winner (2009 and 1999) for "EastEnders". Her last appearance in the soap came in 2016, the same year she was made a dame for her services to charity and entertainment. She also worked in theatre-making her stage debut at 13 - and appeared in productions including "Oh! What A Lovely War" and "Fings Ain't Wot They Used to Be". Barbara became an ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society and met Prime Minister Boris Johnson to raise awareness about the disease after her dementia diagnosis Dame. Barbara Windsor was a versatile actress who passed away on 10th December 2020 at the age of 83 in London, England at 8:35 pm. Her husband Scott Mitchell said she had died peacefully from Alzheimer's at a London care home on Thursday evening. She had been diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and had moved to a care home earlier this year. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and she elected not to make the condition public in April 2014, but it was known to her friends and colleagues. Windsor's husband, Scott Mitchell, publicly revealed her condition on 10th May 2018. Mr. Mitchell said she would be remembered for the "love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives".

Early Life of Barbara Windsor

Barbara Windsor took birth on 6th August 1937 with the real name or full name of Barbara Ann Deeks in Shoreditch, London, England. However, her residence was on Angela Street. She held a British nationality and British-white ethnicity. Analogously, she was from a Christianity religion and her race was white. She used to happily celebrate her birthday on 6th August of every year and she lastly celebrated her 83rd birthday though as her birthdate, her star sign was Leo. She was the only child of John Deeks (father), a costermonger, and his wife, Rose (mother), a dressmaker. She attended William Patten School in Church Street. She passed her 11-plus exams and earned a scholarship for a place at Our Lady's Convent in Stamford Hill after the war, where she earned an A-Level in Shipping Management. Her mother paid for her to have elocution lessons, and she trained at the Aida Foster School in Golders Green, making her stage debut at 13 and her West End debut in 1952 in the chorus of the musical Love From Judy which ran for two years.

  • Barbara Windsor commenced her acting career by making her stage debut at 13 and her West End debut in 1952 in the chorus of the musical "Love From Judy" which ran for two years as her first series was "Dreamer's Highway", "The Jack Jackson Show" and "Six-Five Special".
  • She then gave her first film role in "The Belles of St Trinian's" which was released in 1954 and joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, where she starred in "Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be" and Littlewood's film "Sparrows Can't Sing" (1963).
  • Barbara also starred in the film comedy "Crooks in Cloisters" (1964), the fantasy film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968), and in the sitcoms "The Rag Trade" and "Wild, Wild Women".
  • After then, she starred in nine "Carry On films" though her first was "Carry On Spying" in 1964 and her final "Carry On..." film acting role was in "Carry On Dick" in 1974. Whereas, one of her most iconic scenes was in "Carry On Camping" in 1969, where her bikini top flew off during outdoor aerobic exercises. 
  • As well, she appeared on Broadway in the Theatre Workshop's "Oh, What a Lovely War!", "Twang!!" as she landed the role of music hall legend Marie Lloyd in the musical-biopic "Sing A Rude Song" in 1970.

  • "EastEnders" was launched in 1985 where Barbara was offered to join which she accepted and took over the role of Peggy Mitchell. But, Windsor announced she was to leave her role as Peggy Mitchell, saying she wanted to spend more time with her husband in October 2009 as her character left Albert Square after a fire destroyed the Queen Victoria pub, of which she was the owner on 10th September 2010.
  • It was also announced in July 2013 that Windsor was to return for one episode, which aired on 20th September 2013 and again returned for a single episode on 25th September 2014 and made a further appearance for "EastEnders" 30th anniversary on 17th February 2015.
  • Additionally, she secretly filmed a return to "EastEnders" in November 2015, which was shown in January 2016 though her last appearance aired on BBC One on 17th May 2016.

Firstly, she was married to Ronnie Knight on 2nd March 1964 and divorced in January 1985. Then she tied a knot with Stephen Hollings, chef/restaurateur on 12th April 1986 but again got divorced in 1995. After then, she became the wife of former actor and recruitment consultant, Scott Mitchell on 8th April 2000 with whom she passed her life. Her relationship with Scott was exceptional and they shared a lot of love with each other in every step of their life. Furthermore, talking about her sexual orientation, she was straight.

She also had an on-going affair with fellow actor and co-star, Sid James which lasted 10 years until his death in 1976.
