Diego Forlan Corazo is an Uruguayan former professional footballer who played as a forward. He is regarded as one of the greatest Uruguayan players of all time. At the club level, Forlan is a two-time winner of both the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Shoe. With Uruguay, he had huge individual success at the 2010 World Cup, finishing as joint top scorer with five goals, including the goal of the tournament, and winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.

Former Manchester United forward retires

Former Uruguay captain and English Premier League winner with Manchester United, Diego Forlan has announced his official retirement at the age of 40. Forlan had been without a team since a brief spell last year with Kitchee Sports in Hong Kong.

"I've decided to stop playing professional football," said Forlan in quotes made to local television station Teledoce, and picked up in daily newspaper El Observador on Tuesday.

"Recently I had an offer to play, but I was looking for excuses. I was being more selective and it was difficult," he added.

Early life of Diego Forlan

Diego Forlan was born on 19 May 1979 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He holds Uruguayan nationality. He was born to his father Pablo Forlan and his mother Pilar Corazo along with his sister Alejandra Forlan. His father was also a footballer and have played for Uruguay in the 1966 and 1974 World Cups. Forlan was a tennis player in his starting phase but later decided to follow his father's occupation football when his sister Alejandra was involved in a horrific car accident, which killed her boyfriend and became paralyzed as result.   • Forlan started his professional career with Independiente, where he scored 37 goals in 80 league games.
  • Forlan joined Manchester United for £6.9 million on 22 January 2002.
