Axel Laurent Angel Lambert Witsel professionally known as Axel Witsel is a Belgian professional football player who plays for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the Belgian national team as a midfielder. He began his career at his hometown club Standard Liège, winning five domestic trophies where he made 183 appearances and scored 42 goals in all the competitions. Additionally, he was awarded the Belgian Golden Shoe in 2008. After a season in Portugal with Benfica, on 3 September 2012, he signed for Zenit Saint Petersburg for a €40 million fee. During his time in Russia, he won four honors before leaving for Tianjin Quanjian on 3 January 2017. On 6 August 2018, he then signed for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund for a €20 million fee, and went on to win DFL-Supercup in 2019 and DFB-Pokal in 2020-21. 


On the international level, Axel Witsel has represented Belgian at various age levels. He has represented at U15, U16, U17, U18, U19, U21, and the senior level. In 2007, he played for the Belgian U21 side, earning nine caps as well as helping his side reach the semi-finals of the 2007 UEFA European U21 Football Championship. He made his senior international team debut for Belgian on 26 March 2008. He has represented Belgian at the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018, and the UEFA European Championship in 2015 and 2020, helping them to third place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament.
