White House instructs Hope Hicks to KEEP QUIET

Hope Hicks may have escaped the Trump White House for a plum job at Fox in sunny L.A., but she isn’t quite free of the fracas that surrounds Donald Trump. On Tuesday, Rep. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and wielder of subpoenas, confirmed that the White House had instructed both Hicks and Annie Donaldson, a former staffer to White House counsel Don McGahn, not to cooperate with the House committee’s subpoena for documents from their time at the White House. The administration’s rationale is that the documents contain privileged information. And while Nadler noted that Hicks “has agreed to turn over some documents to the committee” and “[thanked] her for that show of good faith,” he also noted that the president “has no lawful basis for preventing these witnesses from complying with our request.” When asked if he would consider holding Hicks in contempt of Congress if she refused to comply, he responded, “I assume so.” If you ask Team Trump, that’s all according to plan. “The more they beat that drum, the more they keep saying impeachment, the more this emboldens our campaign and it pushes us forward,” Brad Parscale, Trump’s campaign manager, said in an interview on Sunday. Still, that strategy could prove dangerous for Hicks, who could find herself in legal trouble if she continues to defy the House’s request.

House Democrats subpoena ex-White House staffers Hope Hicks and Annie Donaldson in obstruction of justice probe

  • House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler subpoenas former White House officials Hope Hicks and Annie Donaldson to testify. Donaldson was chief of staff to former White House counsel Don McGahn, who on Tuesday defied the Judiciary panel’s subpoena to testify about special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe. Hicks is a former White House communications director. “As I said earlier today, the Judiciary Committee’s investigation into obstruction of justice, public corruption and abuse of power by President Trump and his Administration will continue,” Nadler says. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., on Tuesday, subpoenaed former White House officials Hope Hicks and Annie Donaldson to testify before his committee and provide documents related to a sweeping probe of figures in President Donald Trump’s orbit.
  • Hicks and Donaldson were ordered to produce the requested documents to the committee by June 4. Hicks’ subpoena sets a June 19 date for her to testify in a hearing before the Judiciary Committee, while Donaldson is asked to appear June 24 for a deposition. The Judiciary Committee said in a statement that the subpoenas for Hicks and Donaldson were issued for “testimony and documents” related to its probe of “obstruction of justice, public corruption, and other abuses of power by President Trump, his associates, and members of his Administration.”
