Iga Natalia Świątek, professionally known as Iga Świątek is a professional tennis player from Poland. Likewise, she is the daughter of Tomasz Świątek, a retired Olympic rower. She won the French Open in 2020 and 2022 as well as the US Open in 2022 to become a three-time major singles champion. As a result, she is the first Polish athlete to win a major singles title. To date, she has won a total of 11 WTA Tour-level titles.  

Similarly, she was ranked as the world no. 1 player by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) on April 4, 2022.

Moreover, Świątek won the WTA Fan Favorite Shot of the Year in 2019 with a drop shot from the baseline and was named the WTA Fan Favorite Singles Player of the Year in 2020. Junior Career

  • Iga Świątek began competing in ITF Junior Circuit events in 2015 at age of 13.
  • At the 2016 French Open, Świątek made her Junior Grand Slam debut by making it to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles. She ended up winning the best junior title at the Grade 1 Canadian Open Junior Championships. 

Professional Career

  • Świątek began her professional career after she competed on the ITF Women's Circuit in 2016. She won all seven ITF singles finals she reached: her first three titles came at 15 years old.
  • She entered the top 200 for the first time at the age of 17, rising from No. 298 to No. 180 in those two weeks in 2018.
  • Świątek won her first WTA draw at the 2019 Australian Open and made her first WTA breakthrough at the Ladies Open Lugano in April 2019.
  • Likewise, she entered the top 100 at age of 17.
  • At the Australian Open 2020, she returned to the WTA Tour. Where, she matched her best result at a Grand Slam tournament with another fourth-round appearance, this time highlighted by a victory over No. 20, Donna Vekić.
  • In her final match before the WTA Tour was suspended for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she defeated Vekić again at the 2020 Qatar Open.

  • Świątek entered the 2022 Australian Open as the seventh seed. Where, she defeated Harried DArt in the first round, Rebecca Peterson in the second round, Daria Kasatkina in the third round, and Sorana Cirstea in the fourth round. In the quarterfinal, she defeated Kaia Kanepi but lost to Danielle Collins in the semifinal.
  • At the 2022 Qatar Open, she defeated Anett Kontaveit in the final and grabbed her second WTA 1000 championship title.
  • Świątek defeated Maria Sakkari in the final at the 2022 Indian Wells and became the first Pole to win the title.
  • On 20 March 2022, she reached a career-high ranking of world no. 2, with consecutive Masters wins.
  • On 23 March 2022, she clinched the world no. 1 singles ranking due to the retirement of reigning world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty. However, the new ranking was applied on 4th April, after Barty was officially removed from the rankings.
  • Świątek defeated Naomi Osaka in the final, 6-4, 6-0 to win the women's singles title at the 2022 Miami Open. As a result, she became the fourth as well as a youngest woman (11th player overall) to complete the Sunshine Double and also the 1st woman to win the first three WTA 1000 events of the year.
  • At the 2022 Women's Stuttgart Open, she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final, and won her fourth consecutive WTA title.
  • She defeated Ons Jabeur in straight sets to claim her fifth consecutive WTA Tour title at the 2022 Italian Open.
  • At the 2022 French Open final, she defeated Coco Gauff and clinched her second French Open Title.
  • At the 2022 US Open, she defeated Ons Jabeur in the final and became the first Polish woman to win the US Open bringing her to a total of three major titles.

National Representation

  • Świątek represented Poland at the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals for 14-and-under girls twice in 2014 and 2015. And even won all of her matches in 2014 leading Poland to ninth place.
  • In 2016, she won the Junior Fed Cup title defeating the United States 2-1 in the final.
  • The 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games was the last event of her junior career.
  • In 2018, she made her senior Billie Jean King Cup debut when Poland was in Europe/Africa Zone Group I.
  • However, Świątek won her only singles match in 2018 and 2019 won both of her doubles matches while partnering with Alicja Rosolska.
