Jazz Janewattananond has no regrets about his first PGA Championship

On Sunday evening, Jazz Janewattananond, a Bethpage first-timer by way of Bangkok, was milling with his entourage near the entrance to the red-brick clubhouse at this sprawling state-run golf facility. The 23-year-old had just signed for a seven-over-par 77 on a breezy day on the lethal Black Course that bounced him from a tie for second after 54 holes to a forgettable T-14, a distant 10 strokes behind the victor, Brooks Koepka of Jupiter, Fla. Regrets? Just one, Jazz said, and it wasn’t bogeying six of his last seven holes to fade from contention. Jazz made a name for himself on Long Island this week, and not just because his actual name barely fit on the leaderboards. (It’s pronounced just as it looks, by the way: Jane-what-a-NAN-ond.) With a steady diet of hammered tee shots and clutch putting, the three-time Asian Tour winner who also moonlights on the European Tour coolly hung up rounds of 70-68-67 before his Sunday swoon. That, to steal an unfortunate bit of golf-commentator parlance, is seriously golfing your ball.

PGA Championship 2019: Who is Jazz Janewattananond?

Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand lines up a putt on the 16th green during the second round of the 2019 PGA Championship at the Bethpage Black course on May 17, 2019, in Farmingdale, New York. He is ranked 72nd on the Official World Golf Ranking and was added as a special invitation by the PGA of America to the Bethpage field, this being his first PGA Championship.  This week at Bethpage he’s using a local caddie, Jack Miller, who locals consider the No. 1 looper on the Black course. “It’s good, it’s good, it’s great. Sometimes I’m finding it hard to understand his New York accent,” Jazz told Newsday’s Mark Hermann earlier this week. “But it’s good. [Miller] brought some crowd with him.” This is his first time visiting the New York area. He arrived late last week and did some sightseeing, including visiting the World Trade Center and Sept. 11 Memorial, before coming to the course to prepare for the championship. He introduced himself to Tiger Woods on Monday for the first time but got tongue-tied while doing it. "I lost words. I couldn't say anything."

PGA Championship 2019: The most popular person at Bethpage

Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand prepares to play a shot on the 12th hole during the third round of the 2019 PGA Championship at the Bethpage Black course on May 18, 2019, in Farmingdale, New York.  Jack Miller was beaming like a new proud papa in front of the Bethpage clubhouse and judging by the endless back-pats and handshakes and attaboys, you'd be forgiven for thinking that was the case. You could even make the argument he was, as his 50-year dream had just come into existence. Tiger Woods entered the 2019 PGA Championship as its star; Brooks Koepka has proved its conqueror. It's folk hero, however, has not hit a shot.
