About João Palhinha

João Maria Lobo Alves Palhinha Gonçalves professionally known as João Palhinha is a Portuguese football player who plays as a defensive midfielder for Sporting CP and the Portugal national team. He started playing football for the youth team of Alta de Lisboa in 2008 and played for one year. In 2009, he joined the youth team of Sacavenense and went on to play for three years at the club. In 2012, he then joined the youth team of Sporting CP and began his career at the club. From July 2015 to January 2017, he was loaned to Primeira Liga clubs Moreirense and Belenenses, respectively. He then returned to Sporting CP and made his competitive debut for the club with the first team on 21 January 2017. On 7 August 2018, he was loaned to Braga for the two seasons where he made 76 appearances and scored 6 goals in all the competitions. After returning to Sporting CP from loan, he became a starter for the club and went on to win the 2020-21 Primeira Liga, 2020-21, 2021-22 Taca da Liga and 2021 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira. 


On the international level, João Palhinha has represented Portugal at various age levels. He has represented Portugal at U18, U19, U20, and the senior level. In March 2021, he was called up to the full side for the first time, for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan, Luxembourg, and Serbia. He made his senior international team debut for Portugal on 24 March 2021. In May 2021, he was included in Portugal’s squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 where he played two games matches as Portugal was knocked out in the round of 16.
