Kiran Rao Biography
Kiran Rao is mostly known as the ex-wife of the Bollywood superstar Amir Khan. She is also a film producer, director, and screenwriter of Hindi cinema. She began her career as an assistant director for the movie "Lagaan" which was nominated for an Academy Award for the foreign-language film category. She also assistant directed the films "Saathiya" and "Swades: We, the People". In 2011, She wrote and directed the movie "Dhobi Ghat" (MumbaiDiaries). She has also produced several acclaimed films like "Taare Zameen Par", "Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na", "Peepli Live", "Talaash", "Dangal" and "Sectet Superstar".
Besides, she is also the co-founder of Paani Foundation, a non-profit organization working towards the mission of fighting drought and water crises in Maharashtra.
Childhood and Family Background
Born in Hyderabad, Telangana, India on 7th November 1973 Kiran Rao grew up in Kolkata and in 1992, she moved to Mumbai as her parents moved to Mumbai. She is the first cousin of Bollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari. Raja of Wanaparthy J. Rameshwar Rao is the paternal grandfather of Kiran and Maternal grandfather of Aditi. Wanaparthywas a large estate under the Nizam of Hyderabad and is currently a district of Telangana. But there is no information about her parents and siblings. She holds Indian nationality and belongs to Asian-Indian ethnic background. Talking about her religious belief, she is an atheist. She is a vegan and has also influenced her ex-husband Amir Khar to turn vegan as well.
Concerning her educational qualifications, Rao enrolled at Loreto House, Kolkata for her primary education. Later on, she graduated with a food science major from the Sophia College for Women in 1995. She then attended the Social Communications Media Course at the Sophia Polytechnic for two months but then quit and moved to Delhi. She has done master's degree at AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.
Personal Life, Husband & Son
Kiran Rao is married to Bollywood's perfectionist Aamir Khan. The couple first met each other on the set of the film "Lagaan" as Kiran was one of the assistant directors and Aamir was the lead in the film. They tied a knot on 28 December 2005. The couple welcomed a son, Azad Rao Khan on 5th December 2011, through a surrogate mother.
After 15 years of their marriage, the couple announced their separation via a Joint statement on 3rd July 2021. In the statements, they thanked their family and friends for their continuous support in this matter and also stated that they would raise their son Ajad as co-parents and continue their professional partnership with Paani Foundations and other projects.
Aamir Khan had previously been married to Reena Dutta with whom he has two children, a daughter named Ira Khan and a son Named Junaid Khan.
