Magic Johnson makes Lakers situation messier by citing Rob Pelinka's 'betrayal'

Magic Johnson has once again performed the seemingly impossible. He has just made the Lakers messier. In an interview on ESPN’s “First Take” talk show Monday-mere hours before the Lakers were scheduled to hold a news conference to introduce new coach Frank Vogel-Johnson took a verbal leaf blower to his dysfunctional former employer and stirred up an ugly haze of accusations that left another coat of grime on a once-proud franchise.  He confirmed he felt betrayed by general manager Rob Pelinka. He confirmed he suddenly quit because he wasn’t allowed to fire then-coach Luke Walton. He said the Lakers have too many voices involved in the decision-making process, including owner Jeanie Buss’ confidant Linda Rambis, former coach and Buss boyfriend Phil Jackson, and business boss Tim Harris.

Magic Johnson says he would have targeted Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard in free agency

Former Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson said he would have pursued Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving and/or Toronto Raptors forward Kawhi Leonard as free agents this summer. “I would say Kawhi and Kyrie are the two guys,” Johnson shared on ESPN’s “First Take” Monday morning. “One of those two.” He is no longer a member of the Lakers’ front office, he still seemed open to the possibility of helping recruit players in the future. With potentially $32.5 million available in salary-cap room, the club will certainly look to bring in another star alongside James. During his appearance on “First Take,” his first since abruptly stepping down from his post in April, Johnson also called out general manager Rob Pelinka for his “betrayal,” shook his head at the notion that the Lakers might trade James, and confidently predicted the team will win a championship during James’s tenure.
