- It was announced on 31st May 2007 that Hargreaves would join Manchester United on 1st July 2007 as he made his first Premier League appearance in Manchester United's third game of the season, in the derby match away to Manchester City in a 1-0 defeat. He scored his second league goal for the club on 13th April, a free-kick winner against Arsenal. His contract expired at the end of the 2010-2011 season and he left the club, despite offering to play the 2011-2012 season for free.
- Manchester City confirmed on 31st August 2011 that they had signed Hargreaves on a one-year deal however, it was confirmed on 27th April 2012 that he would be released at the end of the season after just four appearances for the club.
